A sample month from our calendar

Christmas 2007 & New Year 2008

Our calendar uses the months of 2008 to review our journey in 2007.  We hope you enjoy it - if you have a colour printer, print the 12 pages and make a calendar to hang.  Otherwise just view it.  It is a PDF file and is 3.4 MB.  You will find it at Downloads/calendar2008.pdf

Then, have a geat Xmas 2007, and as you make resolutions and plan for 2008, include a trip to Bali in your plans - we would love to see you.
Merry Xmas

Malaysia Part 3 - out and about

Just outside our hotel in KL was an India temple that was usually a hive of activity from early morning till late.  Sometimes there were bells, and ceremonies inside (repeated on TV monitors), and at other times food was being served outside.

Next to the temple there were stalls selling accessories for worshippers as well as basic needs.  And next to that is a restaurant that was busy all day and had good indian food quite cheaply.

Melaka Restaurant on Jonkers Walk
Melaka Restaurant on Jonkers Walk

In Melaka, just off an area called Jonker's walk, we found this restaurant with live music.  Hendra chats with Shirley, and in the background is Chris - another Aussie from Mackay in Qld.
Another Melaka hangout was this Honky Tonk Cafe.  It had a small balcony overlooking the river, and Joe "Fingers" - the NZ owner/manager (with his Malaysian wife) was adept on the piano and keyboard.  Linda is watching Hendra and Joe.

Rima Trade Centre - the place for computer gear

Travelling north on Jalan Diponegoro (whichis one-way north), just past the Amsterdam Bakery on the left and just before Ramayana on the right, there is the Rima Trade Centre on the left.  A large 3 floor building with some car-parking in front, and more parking underneath.  Inside Rima, are many small businesses supplying everyting to do withh computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras.  There are shops for desktops, shops for laptops, others for phones and accessories, and others for consumables like ink, blank DVDs etc.

Malaysia Part 2 - Shopping in Kuala Lumpur

Cities like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are so much bigger than Denpasar, so it is not surprising that shopping becomes one of the main activites for the trip. Jalan Petaling in the heart of Chinatown is a covered market street that stays open late.  Quality silk ties caught my eye and reminded me of my past life - I don't think I have worn one since arriving in Bali 11 months ago

Low Yat Plaza is just of Jalan Bukit Bintang near to the Federal Hotel.  It is a large complex of 5 or 6 levels devoted to computers, cameras and the like.  I could have spent hours browsing.  While many shops were specifically focussed, and had customers sitting across counters from sales-people -- I found one large store high up which was like a Tandy of Dick Smith.  Rows and rows of mechandise you could pick up and read.  I got a USB hub, and a USB 2 extension cable.

Pavillion for fashion
Pavillion for fashion

The Pavillion is a huge, new (open 2 months) complex with lots of designer labels - a paradise for fashion shoppers.  It was already dressed for Xmas and was about to host some fashion event that required a red carpet that you can see on the staircase opposite.

Malaysia Truly Asia
Malaysia Truly Asia

Malaysia Part 1 - General Reactions

"Malaysia - Truly Asia" is the slogan we had all heard as five of us boarded our Air Asia for Kuala Lumpur on Mon Nov 26.  We were keen to figure out for ourselves how "true" the slogan was, and how tourism in Malaysia compares to Bali.

But before we left, we heard of riots on Sunday 25th.  Of course, we were determined to go - but the aftermath that we experienced included newpaper analysis and taxi driver comments.  Hindraf - an Indian action group - wanted to present a petition to the British High Commissioner - basically claiming compensation because British decisions in the past had disadvantage the Indian community.  They did not succeed in delivering it. There are more BBC News pictures here .

We stayed in the Chinatown" area - but the people and cafes around us were more Indian than Chinese.

However, we had a great time.  Here we are in a Sushi restaurant with the tempting dishes passing by on the small railway system.  This one, and other restaurants we found were mostly really good.  Maybe a bit more expensive than Bali, but not much.
We went out of KL to Melaka for a couple of nights and enjoyed the different vibe here.  The centre has historic reminders of the Portugese, then Dutch administrations that preceded the British.  Again, the bars restaurants and shopping were good.  Here we are heading up river.
